Specializing in Custom & Soy Biodiesel

Biodiesel is a clean burning fuel that is renewable and domestically produced. Biodiesel can be blended at any level with petroleum to create a blend. In most cases, few or no modifications are needed to use biodiesel in any equipment that consumes regular diesel. Biodiesel is simple to use, biodegradable, nontoxic, and essentially free of sulfur and aromatics.

PepUp is one of few oil companies in Maryland, Virginia, and Delaware to offer the largest distribution network for soy-based biodiesel. Custom blends of soy biodiesel can be created to customer specifications. From B2 to B99.9, the product can be delivered in quantities as small as 500 gallons to as much as 7,000 gallons. B100 is also available at our Federalsburg office for drive-up customers.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About PepUp Bulk Fuel Services

Soy-based biodiesel is a renewable, sustainable, low-emission fuel that can be used in most diesel engines with minimal modifications (with B100 grade, pure soy biodiesel as the exception). It provides some engine protection due to its naturally lubricating components, and its use supports American soybean farmers.

Soy biodiesel is blended with conventional diesel fuel at different ratios to optimize engine performance, minimize the need for modifications, and meet the needs of specific fleet applications. Here’s a comparison of a few typical biodiesel grades PepUp provides (although custom blends are available):

B5 (5% Biodiesel, 95% Petroleum Diesel)

  • Application: Commonly used in standard diesel engines without modifications. Within ASTM specifications for diesel engines.
  • Advantages: Optimal alternative-fuel engine performance and added lubricity; widely accepted by manufacturers.
  • Use Cases: Everyday vehicles, commercial fleets, marine applications, and agricultural equipment.

B20 (20% Biodiesel, 80% Petroleum Diesel)

  • Application: Suitable for most diesel engines with some minor adjustments if needed.
  • Advantages: Balances improved emissions with compatibility; better lubricity and reduced engine wear. EPA-recognized alternative fuel, eligible for EPAct fleet credit with minimal investment.
  • Use Cases: Commercial and government fleets, buses, delivery trucks, and municipal vehicles.

B50 (50% Biodiesel, 50% Petroleum Diesel)

  • Application: Used in specialized fleets or engines designed to handle higher biodiesel content.
  • Advantages: Significant emission reductions; higher renewable content.
  • Use Cases: Certain fleet operations committed to sustainability, specific pilot projects, or controlled environments.

B100 (100% Biodiesel)

  • Application: Requires engines designed or modified to run entirely on biodiesel; careful handling and storage needed.
  • Advantages: Maximizes environmental benefits; no petroleum content.
  • Use Cases: Certain agricultural, industrial, and municipal fleet applications, government and educational research fleets, and controlled-use scenarios.

Soy biodiesel generally provides similar engine performance and fuel efficiency to conventional diesel. It offers better lubrication, but may cause minor issues with fuel filters and injectors due to its viscosity at grades above B20. Regular maintenance ensures vehicle longevity is not compromised, while lower emissions contribute positively to environmental impact.

Higher blends (above B20) have three unique storage and handling requirements, including temperature control, additives to extend shelf life, and storage container compatibility. Here’s a bit more detail:

  1. Temperature Control: Biodiesel can gel at higher temperatures than regular diesel. It’s important to store soy biodiesel in a temperature-controlled environment, especially in colder climates. B20 does fine in the Mid-Atlantic region with a simple winter additive.
  2. Shelf Life: Any fuel can degrade over time. Use antioxidants or biocides to reduce moisture levels, extend storage life, and prevent microbial growth.
  3. Material Compatibility: Store biodiesel in containers made from compatible materials such as stainless steel, aluminum, or high-density polyethylene (HDPE) to avoid degradation and contamination.

Pros: Converting to alternative fuels can lower emissions, reduce fuel costs, and potentially qualify for government incentives.
Cons: Conversion costs can be high for blends above 20 percent biodiesel, and not all vehicle types are suitable for conversion.

Most modern diesel engines can run on biodiesel blends, such as B5 (5% biodiesel) or B20 (20% biodiesel), without any modifications. However, higher biodiesel blends or pure biodiesel (B100) may require some adjustments or modifications to fuel systems and maintenance routines to ensure optimal performance and longevity. Always consult the vehicle manufacturer’s guidelines before using higher biodiesel blends.
